Patricia Bolduc: Do NOT submit to Poetry.com! Loresinger99 gave you sound advice. Anything with a .com at the end is in the business of making and taking your money. They are not interested in promoting your career as a writer. If you want to invest in a listing of legitimate publications who do offer an! nual contests (most of which are universities) you can purchas! e the The CLMP Directory of Literary Magazines and Presses, Manic D Press, San Francisco. It'll run you about $35.00 and it lists most of the literary magazines in the country and what genre they specialize in. It tells you whether or not they hold an annual contest and what the prize is. It tells you how to submit your poetry and if and how they pay. Many don't pay their authors in cash, but instead with copies or subscriptions to their magazines. Only the big magazines like The New Yorker or Vanity Fair pay well. Therefore, most poets subsidize their incomes by teaching and/or lecturing. Or, they have second careers in other art fields. Good Luck!...Show more

Marquetta Gimm: Veronica most of the truly respectable contests are hosted through a school or college (or sometimes a literary group). The ones you see online are frequently just scams that get you to send in your work, then ask you to pay a large sum to buy the book in which it appears. They don't turn down ! anyone and there's absolutely no real life recognition ... rather they're preying on people's desire to be recognized. Poetry is one of the most difficult fields of writing. I suggest first establishing yourself as a poet. See if any of your local papers have a weekly poetry corner (ours does), and check on various magazines that also accept poetry. It's easier to find outlets for your work once your voice is better known.Best wishes in Pen!...Show more
