Madie Strople: Through the act of evolution all animals have adapted to fill specific niches in their environment. Darwin discovered this by his studies of wildlife on the Galapagos Islands. An example of this are the Marine Iguanas. As these lizards developed through millions of years they began to tap into the underwater plants as food because of competition for, and scarcity of, vegetation on the land. These remarkable lizards learned through time to hold their breath a long time, and feed on the plants under the water near the shore line. Through evolution, they also were able to rid their bodies of the access salt accumulated in their systems as they ate these oceanic plants. They sneeze the salt out through their nostrils. All these traits changed them into lizards like no other on the planet. Evolution "fit" them into a niche previously unoccupied by any other animal. ...Show more
Rona Ising: an animal that is adapted to its environment is one that ! has developed a certain characteristic that is advantageous to it environment. this is usually caused by years of evolution by animals that survive, they pass on their genes whereas disadvantageous genes disappear from the gene pool. an example of an animal that is adapted to its suroundings would be something like humans. we used to have toes on the sides of our feet for climbing trees but now we have toes that point forward which allows us to walk upright. ...Show more

Krystal Cordovano: One example of an animal that has adapted to it's environment is the Sidewinder snake. Instead of just going forward like it's other relatives, it adapted a peculiar way of undulating across the hot desert sand so as not to let too much of it's body touch the sand at one time. Or how ab! out the giraffe? It's prehistoric relatives were much shorter ! compared to how they are today. Over the centuries, they have developed longer necks and tongues to reach the leaves that grow at the tops of trees. Probably due to over population, or lack of a better food source, the giraffes neck grew to accomodate the only food source availiable....Show more
