How many plausible alternative fuel sources (for automobiles) is there?

Roni Kurz: ---The most plausible alternative is right under our noses, is economically viable, and for sale right now. We are being distracted with talk of hydrogen and ethanol so that we will not look at it.*It is electricity. Did you know you can buy - today - an electric car for a few thousand dollars that does freeway speeds, looks and handles like a normal car, and uses only a penny or two worth of electricity per mile? More details here:*http://squidoo.com/cheap-electric-car*And the state-of-the-art in electric cars is even more impressive. Here's what you can get for about $45,000:*http://phoenixmotorcars.com/models/fleet.html*The Phoenix electric car travels up to 250 miles per charge, can charge batteries in only TEN MINUTES, has a battery pack with a 250,000 mile lifetime, and can carry a full cargo load at 95mph. It is not just a concept vehicle - it is being built right now.*So why isn't talk of this car all over the media? Keep in mind that all the other alte! rnative fuels can still use infrastructure provided by the oil companies. Electric is the one energy source they can't control. Especially if we all put up solar panels, and charge our electric cars for free.---...Show more

Miguel Densley: For now, the only other viable alternative is the buzzing ethanol (if you don't count diesel sedans). Ethanol is already being added to most fuels, but it seems there needs to be more work done in research and structural cost evaluations. Hydrogen has been pushed to the public by BMW's famous Hydrogen-7 car. Highly unlikely to become a successful widespread alternative fuel. The energy needed to turn hydrogen into fuel form is not very efficient and practical for largescale use. Some far fetched examples also include customized engines capable of burning vegetable oil.. but those were made just for kicks....Show more

Len Dalba: Alcohols - ethanol and methanol. Compressed natural gas (CNG) - natural gas under high pressure. ! Electricity - stored in batteries. Hydrogen - a very special t! ype of gas. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) - natural gas that is very, very cold. Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) (also called propane) - hydrocarbon gases under low pressure. Liquids made from coal - gasoline and diesel fuel that doesn't come from petroleum. Biodiesel - a lot like diesel fuel, but made from plant oil or animal fat. and to the guy talking about the veg car all you need is a simple kit put into any diesel motor not that hard to do....Show more
