law of conservation of energy... i need an example?

Hans Sachetti: when water is stored up a dam, suppose it has a gravitational potential energy of 10 joules. when it falls over, the gravitational potential energy of 10 joules turns to 8 joules of kinetic energy. so according to the law of conservation of energy, the 2 joules is wasted as probably sound energy.

Carli Watterson: something with a closed, isolated system. E = KE + PE , so like a race track or a spring (of course not considering air drag or friction).
