Rose Krouse: Gravel! There are all kinds of gravel, different sizes and different colors. Make a border around the tree and then fill with gravel. Once done you can decorate by adding a nice pot, garden statue or maybe even a small bench.
Monty Sieloff: Lowe's ? Puhhhleeezzz! Lowe's knows not . Looks too sunny for most hosta , although some would be OK, especially if up against something else . I'd get rid of most or all of that lawn area between the walk and the driveway . If it was mine , I 'd get rid of the straight concrete walk , and replace it with a curving one, preferably of pavers, that goes to the driveway . It would end ~ 1/3 of the way in from the street ! . ( If you divide spaces up into 1/3 's /2/3 , it usually looks better . ) In any event , some sort of upright columner plant(s) should go in that area , to go with the shape of the house . Given the space restrictions , ornamental grass would be my top choice . Around the grass(es) then put some roundy-moundy stuff , such as dwarf conifers, and dwarf barberry . The contrasting forms look good together , and during winter , evergreens & the light brown grass , a good color combination . After that , fill in the remaining space with whatever strikes your fancy . Suggestions : short shrub roses, daylilies, short grasses such as Blue Fescue , perennial geraniums ( not the Pelargoniums sold as annual geraniums ) yucca , rocks , and maybe hosta . Look around when things are up and growing , and see what you like . In the fall , plant some bulbs behind the perennials . Email me any time , if you have questions . The area appears ideal for Rhododenrons as main plants with other underplanting and possibly roses near the streetI am in NZ so not really sure what would be best for your placeAnyway good luck and have sent some photos of some of my gardens. Water feature garden is basically full sun, other gardens are morning or afternoon sun with some shade in the opposite time of day. These gardens are all my own workI like "Mikeinpo" ideas especially changing footpath to a curving one, it is more appealing as it stops you seeing all of the garden from the street and also reduces the direct view of the house from the street...Show more
